Originally established as an outpost of the British Royal Mint in 1908, the Ottawa Branch negotiated its independence in 1931. Renamed the “Royal Canadian Mint”, it struck its first silver bullion coins in 1988. Since then, RCM has produced a vast array of impressively designed silver bullion coins, and it was among the first facilities to ever strike coins with the high .9999 fine silver purity. Other notable firsts released by this innovative mint include colorized coins, holographic coins, square coins, and coins featuring special security details.
The obverse of the 2022 Maple Leaf coin displays the bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. Her Majesty is shown wearing her royal earrings and necklace. Radial lines emanate from the center of the background towards the coin's rim. Inscriptions include the Queen’s name, the denomination, and the year of mintage.
The reverse features an intricately detailed Maple Leaf. A micro-engraved maple leaf near the bottom of the coin provides an extra security measure. Inscriptions for the country, purity, and weight surround the edge of the coin.
