The design included on this face is the sixth-generation portrait of the Queen on Australian coins. The portrait shows Elizabeth II in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. Inscriptions around the design field read Elizabeth II, Australia, 1 oz 9999 Ag, and 1 Dollar.
The coin portrays a tiger cub following its proud and protective parent across a rocky terrain. Both animals are gilded in 24-carat gold. Also included in the design are representations of bamboo and ferns, the Chinese character for ‘tiger’, the inscription ‘TIGER 2022’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
The Chinese Lunar Calendar follows a 12-year cycle that starts with the Year of the Mouse and ends with the Year of the Pig. Each animal is associated with a specific year based on that animal arrival to a meeting with the Jade Emperor. Chinese cultural mythology suggests that the tiger arrived second, just behind the ox.
